The 2026 Instagram Handle Price Index: What Premium Usernames Actually Sell For

Real transaction data from rarehandle.co's marketplace, organized by length and category, to give brands a defensible budget range for handle acquisition.

Why we publish this

There is no public benchmark for Instagram handle pricing. Brands trying to budget for an acquisition rely on anecdote, single transactions screenshot in Telegram groups, or guesses. We sit on real transaction data across hundreds of handles — and most of it is more informative when shared than when held.

The index below reflects rarehandle.co marketplace activity, normalized to ranges to protect transaction privacy. We update it twice a year.

By length

2-letter handles

Extremely rare in liquidity. Recent transactions: $40,000–$120,000+. Most acquisitions happen through claim service rather than open marketplace.

3-letter handles

  • Letter-number combo: $1,500–$4,000
  • Letter-only random: $3,000–$8,000
  • Pronounceable: $8,000–$25,000
  • Word-like or brand-relevant: $15,000–$80,000+

4-letter handles

  • Random combo: $200–$800
  • Pronounceable random: $800–$2,500
  • Word-like (e.g. @vibe): $2,000–$8,000
  • Dictionary word: $5,000–$25,000

5-letter handles

  • Word-like: $500–$3,000
  • Dictionary single-word: $2,000–$10,000

6+ character single-word

  • Common nouns: $500–$5,000
  • Premium dictionary or first-name match: $2,000–$15,000

By category

First names

  • Common (Daniel, Maria): $3,000–$15,000
  • Uncommon (Elio, Anais): $1,000–$5,000
  • Last-name as first (Stone, Cruz): $2,000–$10,000

Common nouns

  • Concrete (chair, sky): $2,000–$15,000
  • Abstract (peace, flow): $3,000–$20,000
  • Verbs as nouns (run, build): $2,500–$12,000

Brand-relevant words

Any handle that maps to a well-known existing brand: +30–200% premium over the base category.

By engagement signal

This is the wildcard. Handles that come with engaged audiences (real, organic followers in a clear niche) trade at significant premiums:

  • 10K–50K followers in a niche: 2–4x handle-only price
  • 50K–250K followers in a niche: 4–10x handle-only price
  • 250K+ followers: priced as media properties, not handles
For follower-bearing accounts we use a different framework — see our /pages section.

What drives variance within a range

Within each range, the top of the range is typically:

  • A short handle (-0 or -1 character vs the midpoint)
  • A vowel-heavy CVC or VCV pattern
  • Cross-platform availability (same handle still free on TikTok / X / YouTube)
  • No legacy posts on the source account
The bottom of the range is typically the inverse: longer, harder to pronounce, fragmented across platforms, posts the buyer will need to delete.

How to use this index

Three use cases:

1. Budgeting: take the midpoint of the relevant range as your initial budget; add 20% for premium attributes.
2. Negotiating: a seller asking 2x the top of the range probably has a specific brand buyer in mind — verify the comp before paying.
3. Walking away: a seller asking 3x the top of the range with no special circumstances is a signal to wait or find an alternative.

Methodology and caveats

  • Ranges are based on closed transactions through rarehandle.co between mid-2024 and 2026
  • We exclude transactions involving follower-bearing accounts (those have a separate index)
  • We exclude private high-end deals that close outside the public marketplace
If you want a specific handle valued, send it to us — we will give you a range within 24 hours.
